Owner Operator
As a business partner with MCL McGill Carriers Ltd., you will be responsible for safely transporting vehicles across Canada and the United States using your own truck and car-hauling equipment. You will manage and operate your own business while partnering with us to ensure the timely and secure delivery of vehicles, while complying with all applicable federal and international regulations and company policies. The ideal business partner will have strong experience in car-hauling operations, excellent driving skills, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities:
- Vehicle Transport: As an Owner-Operator under a business contract, safely operate your own car-hauling truck to transport vehicles across the base provinces where you’re contracted, as well as nearby U.S. states, ensuring timely, secure, and professional delivery.
- Load and Unload Vehicles: Efficiently load and unload vehicles onto the car-hauler, ensuring proper securing and protection during transit.
- Cargo Inspection: Inspect each vehicle for pre-existing damage and document findings to ensure transparency and protect against future disputes.
- Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspections: Perform thorough inspections of your truck and car-hauling equipment before and after each trip, identifying and addressing any maintenance or safety issues.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, provincial, and international regulations related to truck operation, vehicle transport, Hours of Service (HOS), weight limits, and customs procedures. Adhere to all company requirements and manufacturers’ guidelines.
- Border Crossing: Manage necessary documentation and procedures for USA-Canada border crossings, including customs declarations and compliance with import/export regulations.
- Documentation: Complete and maintain accurate records for all deliveries, including logs, delivery receipts, and inspection reports.
- Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service through professional communication, addressing client concerns, and ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Safety: Follow all safety protocols to ensure your safety, the safety of others, and the protection of the vehicles being transported.
Qualifications:
- Valid CDL License: Possess a valid Canadian Commercial Driver’s License (Class 1) with a clean driving record.
- Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a truck driver, preferably with experience in car-hauling and cross-border operations.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of regulations related to truck driving, vehicle transport, and cross-border rules.
- Skills: Exceptional driving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to operate car-hauling equipment efficiently and safely.
- Border Crossing Experience: Familiarity with USA-Canada border crossing procedures and customs regulations.
- Drug Test: Successful completion of a pre-partnership drug test.
- Company Road Test: Must pass a company-specific road test to evaluate driving proficiency.
- Criminal Background Check: A criminal background check will be required as part of the partnership process.
- Own Equipment: Must own and operate a truck and car-hauling trailer that meet the company’s operational standards.
- WCB Coverage: Must have valid Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) coverage for yourself and any employees you may hire to operate your truck.
Physical Demands:
- Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift and handle vehicle parts and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Climbing and Maneuvering: Ability to climb in and out of trucks and car-haulers and maneuver in the vehicle loading area.
- Endurance: Physical stamina for long hours on the road, with occasional periods of standing, bending, and walking.
- Vision and Dexterity: Adequate vision and manual dexterity to operate vehicle controls and perform inspections.
- Weather Conditions: Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and adverse weather.
Working Conditions:
- Travel: Frequent long-distance travel across Canada and into the United States, often with extended periods away from home.
- Environment: Work in both indoor and outdoor settings, including loading and unloading vehicles in various weather conditions.
- Schedule: Flexible working hours, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet delivery deadlines.
- Safety Protocols: Adherence to all safety regulations, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe driving practices.
Training:
New business partners will undergo a training period of 1 to 12 weeks, depending on prior experience. Training will cover company-specific procedures, equipment operation, safety protocols, and cross-border regulations to ensure readiness for the role.
